Share
A Carmel Dog isn’t a breed. It’s a lifestyle. 🌊🐕
And there may be no better place to live it than Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Here, dogs aren't just allowed—they're part of the culture. You’ll see them strolling down Ocean Avenue, snoozing under café tables, shopping alongside their humans and, of course, racing across the sand at Carmel Beach. 🏖️
Whether you’re visiting Carmel with your dog or lucky enough to call the area home, these are some of our favorite places to shop, stay, eat, sip and explore together.
🛍️ SHOP: Dog-Friendly Boutiques in Carmel
🐕 Carmel Dog Shop
If your dog gets to choose one shopping stop in Carmel, this might be it.
Located on Lincoln Street between Ocean and 7th, right next to Cypress Inn, Carmel Dog Shop is a locally owned boutique devoted to dogs and the people who love them. Inside you'll find toys, treats, collars, leashes, apparel and plenty of fun discoveries for your four-legged shopping companion.
We especially love that this feels like a true neighborhood dog shop—not just a place to buy something, but a place for Carmel's dog community to stop in and say hello.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: A whole store just for them, right in the heart of town.
🦴 Diggidy Dog
You really can't write a guide to dog-friendly Carmel without Diggidy Dog.
Located at Ocean Avenue and Monte Verde, this colorful pet boutique has been part of Carmel's dog-loving scene for years. It's packed with treats, toys, accessories, apparel and gifts, making it an especially fun stop while wandering through the village with your pup.
Diggidy Dog also embraces Carmel as a destination for traveling dogs, with its own resources for dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, beaches and activities.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: It's playful, unapologetically dog-centric and perfectly located for a stop during an Ocean Avenue stroll.
🎁 Big Little Boxes
Not every stop on a Carmel Dog day has to be a pet store.
Big Little Boxes, tucked into Carmel Square on San Carlos Street, is a charming local gift shop specializing in ready-made and build-your-own gift boxes. It's a great place to find something distinctly Carmel for a host, friend—or yourself.
While we haven't confirmed a current in-store dog policy, we're including it as one of our favorite local boutiques to have on your radar while exploring Carmel.
💛 Why we love it: Thoughtful, giftable and very Carmel.
🏨 STAY: Dog-Friendly Hotels in Carmel
🐾 Cypress Inn
Cypress Inn isn't simply a hotel that accepts dogs. Dogs are part of its identity.
The historic inn was co-owned by legendary actress and animal advocate Doris Day, and that dog-loving legacy continues today. Every guest room is pet-friendly, with up to three pets permitted and no weight or breed restrictions. There's even a rinse station for sandy paws after a trip to Carmel Beach. 🏖️
Its central location also makes it easy to park the car and explore Carmel on foot—and paw.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: They're treated like guests, not luggage.
🏡 Monte Verde Inn
For a cozy stay right in the village, Monte Verde Inn combines classic Carmel charm with a genuinely useful location for travelers with dogs.
Canine guests are allowed in all rooms at the inn, with up to two dogs per room. From here, you can easily wander through downtown Carmel or head toward the beach without constantly loading everyone back into the car.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: A walkable home base makes a Carmel getaway much easier when your favorite travel companion has four legs.
🐶 Carmel Country Inn
Carmel Country Inn takes its pet-friendly status seriously.
All of its accommodations are pet-friendly, and the inn offers the kinds of details dog people appreciate: bowls and filtered water, pet blankets, treats, a pet bathing station, a relief area and even pet strollers and a wagon.
It's also just a few blocks from Carmel Village and within walking distance of Carmel Beach.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: The amenities make it clear that dogs weren't added to the guest list as an afterthought.
🍽️ EAT, DRINK & HANG OUT: Carmel Spots to Enjoy With Your Dog
🍸 Terry's Restaurant + Lounge at Cypress Inn
If there were an official headquarters for Carmel Dogs and their humans, Terry's would have a pretty strong claim.
Located inside Cypress Inn, Terry's carries the hotel's dog-loving spirit right into the dining experience. There's even a Canine Delights menu alongside the human menus. 🦴
And then there's Yappy Hour. 🐕🍸
The beloved Carmel tradition is back, with dogs and their humans gathering at Terry's Sunday through Wednesday from 3–6 p.m. for drinks, snacks and plenty of canine socializing.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: Finally, a happy hour where bringing your dog isn't a compromise—it's the point.
☀️ Village Corner Bistro
Village Corner Bistro is a longtime Carmel breakfast-and-lunch favorite with the kind of outdoor patio that makes lingering over a meal with your dog feel perfectly natural.
Its central location at Dolores and 6th also makes it an easy stop during a morning or afternoon spent exploring town.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: Patio time, people watching and a prime location for continuing your walk afterward.
☕ Stationæry
For something a little more elevated, Stationæry is one of Carmel's stylish neighborhood spots for breakfast, brunch, coffee and seasonal California cooking.
Its intimate setting and popular brunch service make it a favorite Carmel stop, and the restaurant also offers a takeaway window—particularly handy when your day's itinerary revolves around walks, the beach and having your dog along for the adventure.
💡 Our tip: Because seating arrangements and pet policies can change, check with Stationæry directly about dog-friendly seating when planning your visit.
🐾 Why we love it: A beautiful Carmel breakfast or coffee stop that fits naturally into a morning exploring the village.
🚲☕ Mad Dogs & Englishmen Coffee Bar
With a name like Mad Dogs & Englishmen, this one practically had to make the list.
The specialty coffee bar above the Mad Dogs & Englishmen bike shop welcomes dogs right alongside their humans. Grab a coffee before your morning walk—or take the adventure further downstairs.
Mad Dogs & Englishmen offers bike rentals and tours designed with dog lovers in mind, including its memorable dog-friendly sidecar experience. 🚲🐕 It's one of those businesses that perfectly captures why Carmel is so much fun with a dog: your pup doesn't have to stay behind while you go have the adventure.
🐾 Why Carmel Dogs love it: Coffee for you, an adventure for both of you.
🥐 Carmel Belle
Carmel Belle is an easygoing choice for breakfast, brunch or lunch while you're exploring downtown.
The counter-service café focuses on fresh, locally sourced food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, making it an especially convenient daytime stop before heading back out to explore Carmel.
🐾 Why we love it: Casual, central and easy to work into a day spent wandering Carmel with your best friend.
🐕 Make a Carmel Dog Day of It
One of the best things about Carmel-by-the-Sea is that you don't have to plan your day around having a dog. Your dog can simply be part of the day. 💛
Start with an early walk on Carmel Beach. 🏖️ Head into town for coffee at Mad Dogs & Englishmen. ☕ Wander the village and stop into Carmel Dog Shop and Diggidy Dog. 🛍️ Settle in for breakfast or lunch, spend the afternoon exploring, and finish with Yappy Hour at Terry's. 🍸🐾
Then walk back to your dog-friendly hotel together.
That's the magic of Carmel. ✨
In plenty of destinations, traveling with a dog means researching restrictions, making compromises and figuring out where your pup can and can't go. In Carmel, bringing your dog often feels like the most natural way to experience the town.
And we think that's exactly what being a Carmel Dog is all about.
A Carmel Dog isn't a breed. It's a lifestyle. 🌊🐾
Dog policies, hours and offerings can change, so we always recommend confirming directly with individual businesses before your visit—especially for restaurant seating.
